Star Wars Galaxy Atlas
“I want to be the first one to see them all...”
— Anakin Skywalker, The Phantom Menace
We’re incredibly excited to finally share a project we’ve been working on: The Star Wars Galaxy Atlas — a digital, fully interactive 3D map of the Star Wars galaxy.
What Is the Galaxy Atlas?
The Galaxy Atlas aims to bring the vastness of the Star Wars universe to life like never before. Our goal is to create a real-time, explorable 3D model of the galaxy that includes:
- Regions, Sectors, Systems, Planets, and Moons
- Hyperspace lanes and major trade routes
- Lore and historical events tied to locations
- Societal data like planetary affiliations, population, and economy
- All fetched and updated using data from Wookieepedia.
Think of it as a galactic atlas meets interactive encyclopedia, where you can zoom across the Core Worlds, dive into the Unknown Regions, or follow the Hydian Way from Coruscant to the Outer Rim — all while learning about the cultures, events, and history that shaped the galaxy far, far away.
Where We Are Now
We’re currently in early development, and already making exciting progress. So far, the app can:
- Display a navigable galactic grid
- Divide the galaxy into quadrants that users can explore
- Load and render individual star systems and planets
- Begin laying the foundation for interactable data overlays and UI displays
The foundation of our galaxy map is based on the excellent and detailed work by W. R. van Hage, who created one of the most comprehensive 2D digital maps of the Star Wars galaxy. We’ve taken his map as a baseline and are translating that data into a fully interactive 3D space.
What’s Coming Next
Here’s a peek at our upcoming roadmap:
- Add support for major hyperspace routes and label them visually
- Introduce tooltips and info panels for each object (systems, planets, etc.)
- Fetch and render live lore content from Wookieepedia for every location
- Add timeline and event overlays, showing how the galaxy has changed across eras
- Launch a public alpha once basic navigation and data layers are stable
And further down the line, we plan to implement:
- Advanced search and filtering by faction, era, or conflict
- Temporal navigation to view the state of the galaxy across different time periods
- Community-driven expansion and contributions
A Galaxy Worth Exploring
The Star Wars Galaxy is massive, rich, and ever-expanding — and we believe it deserves to be explored in a way that’s as dynamic and immersive as the stories themselves.
We’ll be sharing regular updates as development continues, and we’d love to bring the community along for the journey. Whether you’re a lore nerd, a dev, a Star Wars mega-fan, or all of the above — this is for you.
“You will never find a more fascinating galaxy of lore, politics, conflict, and civilizations.” – (Okay, we made that one up, but you get the idea.)
May the Force be with you.
